Date set for special election to fill Weiner's seat
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced Friday the special election for former Rep. Anthony Weiner's (D-N.Y.) congressional seat will be held Sept. 13.
Weiner announced his resignation on June 16 after Democratic leaders abandoned him in the wake of his "Weinergate" scandal.
It began when a lewd photo appeared on Weiner's Twitter account. He originally said his account had been hacked, but eventually admitted that he'd had "inappropriate" correspondences with about six women over the past three years via social websites.
Cuomo had to call the election within 70 to 80 days after the vacancy was recognized.
Several candidates' names have been banded about, according to media reports, including Democratic state Assemblyman Rory Lancman, Republican City Councilman Eric Ulrich, Democratic Councilman Mark Weprin, former Democratic Councilman Eric Gioia, former Democratic Councilwoman Melinda Katz and Democratic Assemblyman David Weprin.
The seat leans Democratic.
