Flip-flops: Romney vs. Gingrich

By Niall Stanage - 12/10/11 02:30 PM ET

When the GOP field meets for the ABC News debate in Iowa on Saturday night, the question of who has been the most consistent conservative will take center stage.

The rise of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) has been powered in part by the idea that he is more steadfast in his convictions than former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is often accused of flip-flopping.

Gingrich has enthusiastically embraced this narrative, telling a South Carolina radio station last month that he is “a lot more conservative than Mitt Romney and a lot more electable than anybody else.”

But, looking at Gingrich's record, the former House Speaker has himself executed a number of significant policy changes.

Romney dispatched a heavy-hitting surrogate, former Gov. John Sununu (R-N.H.) last week to accuse Gingrich of throwing conservatives under the bus, while pro-Romney PAC Restore Our Future dropped $3.1 million on television ads in Iowa rebuffing Gingrich’s conservative credentials.

The answer to the question of whether Gingrich or Romney is more inclined to flip-flopping may be less clear than Gingrich would like voters to believe.
