By Sam Youngman - 11/04/08 03:06 PM ET
President Bush, joined by friends and family for an Election Night dinner in the White House, toasted the candidates who would succeed him, saying "May God bless whoever wins tonight."

White House press secretary Dana Perino said Bush, first lady Laura Bush, who is celebrating a birthday Tuesday, and members of the senior staff will monitor the results from the residence.

"The president believes tonight is a night to appreciate the strength of our country and our democracy, as citizens from all over the country exercised their right to vote today, after a historic campaign," Perino said in an e-mail.

Perino reiterated that Bush remains committed to a "smooth" transition regardless of whether Republican John McCain or Democrat Barack Obama wins Tuesday night.

"The president is committed to a transition that is as smooth as possible, a process that has been under way for many months, and as soon as we have a president-elect we’ll be able to do even more on that front," Perino said.

The dinner was a birthday celebration for the first lady that included some of her favorite dishes "and a coconut birthday cake." The president gave his wife earrings as a gift.

George W. Bush is slowly evolving into another Harry S.Truman. Reviled as leaving office, Truman has turnedinto one of the most beloved and able of all presidents.History will bestow the same honor upon George W.Especially when compared to the present occupant ofthe White House…BY JIM WHITTAKER on 11/11/2009 at 11:45
Gee, Thanks GWB for your oppressive Patriot act which isnot patriotic at all but is the oxymonic opposite to the constitution. After voting you into office you really got to enjoying your control for unconstitutiona l signing statements that should never have been followed should have been made Null Void. Thanks for your neo-con party now termed in 2 labels . One called progressives the other that party label that of, left leaning democrat(anothe r fallacy of mislabeled use of terms sort of like the patriot act as an example again saying Up is down left is right light is dark , bad is good..etc.) You will be glad to know citizen Bush that your old policies of undeclared unconstitutiona l wars premptive strikes against other countries through your brilliant nation building techniques is alive well continues to oppress kill many on a daily basis. As evidenced by the continuation of your policies , the Obama administration is observed to be finding your unconstitutiona l policies apparently quite appealing. Obama is now adding another oxymoronic twist (He must have studied your notes) by regulating the control of the internet to his whims all in the name of (pssst…get this one GWB) "Internet terrorists" all done for americas safety security of course. In closing, I am reminded of the quotes by author William Pitt: ""Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." ""Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it."BY Independentlyfree on 11/11/2009 at 12:55
You know after 8 yrs as president of the USA one would think that ex-president Bush would have been told that America is a Republic for which it stands not a democracy. Like GWB used to say,"Tell people something often enough then they will become to believe it is so." Has anyone told our new constitutionall y trained commander chief Yet? He keeps calling America a "democracy" too. One would think that since he used to practice taught students constitutional law that he is playing willfully ignorant? Both parties keep saying, "Just keep repeating after me eventually they will come to believe it is so."BY Sam on 11/11/2009 at 13:08
