A Politico reporter on Thursday said that Biden had made the endorsement, and also that Jones had hired a Biden operative, Bill Romjue, to manage his campaign. Romjue served as Biden's Iowa state director during his unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, which he lost to former President Obama in 2008.

Jones confirmed the endorsement on Facebook with a photo with the former vice president.

Jones is one of seven Democratic candidates seeking the party's nomination in next Tuesday's primary election. A former U.S. attorney, Jones is most famous for prosecuting the perpetrators behind the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.

"I'm asking you to vote for my friend Doug Jones," Biden wrote in a statement Thursday. "Doug has spent his entire life fighting for justice. He was the man after the 1963 church bombings that would not let it rest until he found the killers of those four young girls."

"He'll take that same energy and drive and fight for you and your families in the Senate - for a higher minimum wage, for fair, affordable healthcare, for good schools for our kids," Biden added.

Jones is considered the front-runner for the Democratic nomination after this endorsement and another endorsement earlier this week from Alabama Rep. In a statement, Jones thanked Biden for his support on Facebook.

“I have known and respected Joe Biden for decades. He is the epitome of what we all hope public service can be - thoughtful, kind, human and effective. Louise and I are so appreciative of his friendship and support," he wrote.
