RNC tops Dem haul in August

By Aaron Blake - 09/21/09 05:20 PM ET

The Republican National Committee (RNC) outraised its Democratic counterpart by $1 million in August, according to filings made public over the weekend.

The RNC raised $7.9 million for the month, while the Democratic National Committee (DNC) raised $6.9 million.

The Republicans also have a sizable advantage in cash on hand, with $21 million in the bank and no debt. The DNC has $15.3 million on hand, but also owes about $5.3 million.

Despite holding Congress and the White House, the DNC’s historically inferior fundraising performance has held it back this year. The RNC has outraised it $59.9 million to $53.6 million. The DNC is still faring better than it has in recent cycles, though, relative to the RNC.

Republicans also outraised Democrats in the race for the Senate in August, with the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) raising $3.1 million to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s (DSCC) $2.2 million. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), meanwhile, needed half a million in contributions from three of its leaders to outraise the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), $3.3 million to $3.1 million.
