Big surge among small donors for Republicans helps campaign committees

By Reid Wilson - 10/19/09 01:09 PM ET

The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) have seen a surge in the number of small-dollar donors making contributions in recent months, according to new reports.

The RNC raised $8.74 million in September, ending the month with $18.9 million in the bank. The committee has not carried any debt this year.

Meanwhile, the NRCC raised $3.4 million, spending all but $100,000 and ending the quarter with $4.3 million in the bank. The NRCC still has $2 million in obligations to other vendors.

The Democratic National Committee did not release its totals by late Monday afternoon, but the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee did, becoming the second of the party's three committees to outraise its Republican counterpart.

The DCCC said it would report raising just over $7 million during the month of September while retaining $14.7 million in the bank. The committee had $4.6 million in debt through the end of August, but numbers through the end of September had yet to be released.

As national attention focused on the healthcare debate, unemployment numbers ticked up and political analysts detected a noticeable shift toward the Republican Party, both committees saw a significant boost in online and small-dollar fundraising.

The RNC raised money from an average of 2,400 new donors per day last month. Overall, the average contribution was just $36, according to data to be filed Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission.

The NRCC attracted more than 12,000 new donors last month, the reports will show.

Although it is raising significant amounts of cash, the RNC's bank account balance continues to shrink. Chairman Michael Steele took office in the last days of January, when the RNC had $22.8 million on hand. That number peaked in April, at nearly $24.4 million, but spending on governors' races in Virginia and New Jersey have sapped millions from the party's coffers.

All told, the RNC has spent about $8 million on behalf of former Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell (R) and more than $3 million for former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie (R), the party's nominee in New Jersey.

The numbers are good news for Republicans, as once again the RNC is likely to outraise its Democratic counterpart.

Since President Obama took office, the DNC's fundraising prowess has improved. Still, the RNC has outraised the DNC in three of the past seven months.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) has outraised its Republican counterpart in three straight quarters, though not in every individual month. The DSCC has raised $33.3 million to the National Republican Senatorial Committee's $29.7 million, and it maintains a wide cash-on-hand advantage over the GOP's Senate campaign arm.

Another name for "small donors" = "v-o-t-e-r-s"BY annie on 10/19/2009 at 14:23
These numbers will grow as more of the middle class sees just how damaging Obama, Harry and Nancy are to their every day lives. Did you see how Nancy is now considering a VAT? (value added tax) this is on top of the health care tax middle America will get, and the next debacle. The climate change tax. These folks want control of us and we are NOT going to take it. Vote them ALL out!BY danceswithtrees on 10/19/2009 at 15:03

A VAT eliminates all individual and corporate income taxes replacing it with a tax on purchases and transactions as a form of national sales tax on consumption. That isn't damaging it is really very fair and liberating. I think people will come to accept it just as Europeans have come to realize it as a really fair way to make sure everyone contributes according to their consumption patterns. Ending the April 15th deadline and eliminating all interface between the people and the IRS is something Republicans have been advocating for a long time. One form of it they used to call the FLAT TAX.BY Paul Munnis on 10/19/2009 at 16:35
NOT to woory…The democrats will whup the rePUGnants lying asses!!!BY cheta on 10/19/2009 at 16:42
Nancy's VAT is a tax applied throughout the production/creation process of goods and services. It will not "eliminate all individual and corporate income taxes", it will be in addition to these. Nancy has and will never eliminate an existing tax. And believe me, this tax will be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices. This accomplishes at least two things, a lower standard of living for most and a loss of jobs in the US because many companies will not be able to compete with overseas companies and will either have to cut employment levels or relocate overseas altogether.BY jb3147 on 10/19/2009 at 16:45
Call me cynical, Paul, but how can you believe that the VAT will replace income taxes while Obama, Harry, and Nancy are involved? More than likely it will be a pile-on tax.Come on, now. If you like the flat tax, I refuse to believe you're not as smart as the people in DC trying to sell you this stuff.BY Howard Roark on 10/19/2009 at 16:47
Small donors will not save the republican cult. Considering the vile content of most cultists the sooner the party fails the better. The Supreme Court will be dominated by liberal or moderates before Obama leaves office. Courts of Appeals also. The playing field will be leveled or more towards the sensible moderates and the cult party will lose ground greatly. Only a short time from now, within Obama's term. The party of division of our countrymen will be over.BY Wayne on 10/19/2009 at 17:12
The Democrats will continue to outraise the GOP in the coming months. However that does not indicate that the GOP is in trouble in 010 or that they will lose voters it indicates the value of controlling both the Exec. and Legsilative brahces of government. The president as Bush and Obama have proved can raise millions for their party, having a speaker of the house and senate majority leader also able to stump for candidates and get big business donations also help. What the small donor increases indicate for the GOP is that their lower to middle income support is starting to get interested in the party and politics again. It indicates the base is getting excited and if small donors numbers increase it could have far greate ramifications for 010 then the actual money raised from them.BY gabe on 10/19/2009 at 17:15
All of us need to send money to RNC, no matter if it is 5.00 month. Like it or not, we cannot maintain the U.S. American Democracy as we know it, unless we get rid of those in office now and vote for new people. Gotta keep trying and other than Iraq war, our chances are much better other than the free spending Democrats. the Vat tax would hurt business quite badly as it just taxes along their process of buying, producing selling (as far as I know). Only way a consumer can ease on this is to never buy anything..Period. Yes, and this is on top of all existing taxes. PLUS, THE HEALT H PLAN WILL TAX US FOR 3 YEARS BEFORE HEALT H PLAN TAKES EFFECT. REASON: THEY NEED TO SAVE UP SOME BUCKS TO JUSTIFY ANYTHING THEY DO.SOBY Journe on 10/19/2009 at 17:22
