Barbour touts election success for GOP

By Eric Zimmermann - 11/07/09 06:00 AM ET

This week's elections were a wake-up call that the American people disagree with the Democrats' agenda, Gov. Haley Barbour (R-Miss.) said Saturday.

Barbour, the chairman of the Republican Governors Association (RGA), touted his party's victories in the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial elections.

"Virginia and New Jersey elected new governors Tuesday, and in both cases, voters chose Republican governors to succeed the Democrats elected four years ago. Both are states that President Obama carried by large margins last year," Barbour said in the weekly GOP address.

"Independents, most of whom voted for President Barack Obama only a year ago, are concerned where his policies are taking our country," he added.

Democrats have pointed to the congressional special election they won in upstate New York on Tuesday, arguing that House races turn more on national issues than gubernatorial races.

But Barbour said the elections show that independents aren't happy with the administration's record on job creation and proposed healthcare reform.

Emphasizing that the unemployment rate is inching upward and arguing that healthcare reform would cost even more jobs, Barbour said the election should stand as a referendum on Democrats.

“Isn’t it easy to see why Americans sent that wake-up call on Tuesday?" he said.

Barbour said the Democrats' healthcare bill should be scrapped, and lawmakers should start over on a more bipartisan approach.

Barbour will appear on "Meet The Press" Sunday to comment on the election results.

Democrats lost 2 State Governors and gained 2 House Representatives . That's what I call a "wake-up call." Republicans are looking in the Wrong Direction and, as ever, ignoring the facts.BY Donaldd on 11/07/2009 at 11:55
States created the federal government and states can destroy the federal government. Also winning the states in 2010 means the republicans own the redistricting after the census and can make themselves a more permanent majority.BY Evangelical on 11/07/2009 at 13:10
Talk about ignoring the facts, let me give the Democrats a little math lesson. Elections are winner-take-all propositions, not based on a proportion of what the candidate won. Republicans won New Jersey (8.7 million residents) and Virginia with 7.6 million. That is 16.3 million. Democrats won a special election in upstate New York fair and square, no excuses. That district is home to about 650,000 residents. 16.3 million on a total of 16.95 million comes to about 96%. Nancy Pelosi smiling and saying "we won" is like a high school student who gets a 4% on a final exam and expecting to be named valedictorian.BY Wabash Cannonball on 11/07/2009 at 20:10
Donaldd, comment about states creating the Fedeal government and can distroy it; what was the civil war all about? Also, everyone seems to miss the point that the Governor of VA cannot be reelected. Limit to one term. Its not like a incumbant Democratic governor lost to a Republiican. The governor of VA is one of the least powerful among the states. He or she is lame duck from day one.BY Ken Star on 11/08/2009 at 01:16
To Evangelical above..You are basing the importance of the elections on a math equation of how many voters… really? Governors are local.. and have for the most part only local effects.Congressional seats, on the other hand, get votes on legislation that affects the nation.Republicans have, I believe, 24 governors right now - so I tell you what - I'll trade you the current 26 Dem Governors for 13 more Dem congress seats. Deal?If you want to think of yourselves as the winners.. fine *shrugs*BY David Kennedy on 11/08/2009 at 06:36
