Rep. Etheridge to skip Senate bid

By Aaron Blake - 11/13/09 03:42 PM ET

Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) will not challenge Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) in 2010, his campaign announced Friday.

Etheridge is saying no to the race for the second time this cycle, as Democratic officials convinced him to rethink the race when other recruits didn’t pan out.

“North Carolina is ready for a change in the Senate, as shown in Richard Burr's low approval ratings,” Etheridge said in a statement. “I look forward to helping a Democratic candidate defeat Richard Burr in 2010, but I will not be that candidate.”

His exit leaves the party without a top-tier recruit for the race. National Democrats have balked at the prospect of the front-runner, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, being their nominee.

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper was their top choice and took a meeting with the White House about the race, only to turn his party down.

Marshall now appears a solid front-runner, after attorney and former state Sen. Cal Cunningham opted out of the Democratic primary recently.

Burr is a second-tier target for Democrats, but their success in statewide races in North Carolina in recent years, including with little-known state Sen. Kay Hagan running for Senate last year, has given them hoping of landing a big fish.

Republicans seized on the Democrats’ recruiting failure and said it is a sign of Burr’s strength.

“It’s no surprise though that the Democrats are having such a difficult time fielding a strong challenger considering, in the words of his 2004 opponent Erskine Bowles, ‘Nobody works harder or smarter for North Carolina than Richard Burr does,’” said Colin Reed, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Good. Sen. Burr has been good to American workers and taxpayers by opposing amnesty. Now with Napolitano lying falsely claiming the border is secure enough to do "comprehensive immigration reform" (mass amnesty) we are going to need senators like Burr to stand up to the special interests and oppose amnesty.BY NC guy on 11/13/2009 at 16:03
Burr is an empty suit. He makes Elizabeth Dole look like a genius. Heath Shuler should run. He would destroy Burr.BY A. Harold Datz on 11/13/2009 at 17:52
Hmm…ok that is great, he won't be running for the Senate. Now can we get him out of Congress completely? Health care, cap and tax…I mean tax and tax…oh wait..they like to call it cap and trade, don't they? Too bad we have to wait five more years to get rid of Hagan.BY NC Blue on 11/13/2009 at 18:01
Burr is a slot machine for big pocket special interests. With only 19% of people in NC believing the slot machine should be re-elected, it is amazing Dems are not falling over each other to bounce the non-entity that is Burr.BY NC Dude on 11/14/2009 at 02:55
I think the souring numbers across the country are going to make it hard for dems to get recruits because of the fear of losing. Even a good recruit that could win in some areas will opt out for fear of a headwind that they can't control forcing them to lose and maybe stunt or even halt their once promising careers.BY kabookey on 11/14/2009 at 13:09
I am democrat and I hope he stays I will vote for him.BY Rhoda on 11/14/2009 at 13:16
I'm a lifelong NC democrat, but I will not be supporting any democrats for the upcoming 2010 elections. I'll be voting for Burr.BY forsooth on 11/14/2009 at 22:11
Rep. Etheridge doesn't want to risk having his political career go down the tubes — that's why he isn't running for senate. He has 80% chance of winning re-election as a congressperson … 20%- chance of winning the senate race. So, like most other politicians, he's putting his self-interest ahead of everything else.Besides, Etheridge is just being smart. Any Democrat even thinking of running against an incumbent in next year's politically toxic environment — especially in a state that went for Obama only by ~1% in 2008 — is either incredibly stupid or hopelessly naive.BY Realist on 11/15/2009 at 13:00
