Boehner taps House candidate to deliver GOP weekly address

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) tapped an Oklahoma GOP House candidate to deliver the weekly address on Saturday.

Oklahoma House hopeful Markwayne Mullin is running to fill the seat held by outgoing Rep. Dan Boren (D-Okla.).

“Markwayne Mullin has run a business and created jobs, and he understands the need to shut down the jobs-destroying red tape factory in Washington, D.C.,” Boehner said of his selection. “I’m looking forward to hearing Markwayne’s address and, if elected, I know he’ll be a strong voice in the House for a smaller, more accountable, and less costly government.”

Mullin is the second Republican House contender that has been selected to give the weekly address this election cycle. GOP African-American House candidate Vernon Parker, who is challenging Democrat Kyrsten Sinema for Arizona’s 9th Congressional District, gave the address in September.

Boehner has spent much time since the House recessed several weeks ago campaigning for GOP contenders in the districts seen as potential pick-ups for the party. 

The second district in Oklahoma is one such opportunity for the House Republicans, who are also defending seats in two dozen races across the country. 

Mullin will hit the GOP's campaign talking points on deregulation and lower taxes for small businesses. 

“People in Oklahoma know our economy doesn’t need more regulations — it needs more certainty,” Mullin said. “If we’re serious about keeping jobs here and bringing jobs home, we need to stop burdening small businesses with excessive and unnecessary regulations.

“I’m honored to deliver this week’s Republican address, and will use this time to discuss how running a small businesses drives my campaign for solutions to restrain the government bureaucracy and promote long-term economic growth,” Mullin added.
