Dem: Trump lying about Russia’s role in election

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), a frequent critic of President Trump on Twitter, said Saturday that Trump is “lying” about Russia’s attempts to meddle in the 2016 election.

“I have seen the classified information on Russian hacking. @realDonaldTrump has received classified briefings. I can tell you that @POTUS is LYING," Lieu wrote on Twitter.

"Trump knows the Kremlin hacked America last year,” Lieu added, quoting a report from The New York Times that details Trump’s Saturday comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The tweet from Lieu comes after Trump answered reporters' questions about his meeting with Putin during a stop in Vietnam on Saturday, saying he believes Putin “means it” when he denies Russia meddled in the United States election.

"He just — every time he sees me, he says, 'I didn't do that.' And I believe — I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it," Trump told reporters on Air Force One. "But he says, 'I didn't do that.' I think he's very insulted by it, if you want to know the truth."

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied that it interfered in the United States election.

A declassified report released in January by the intelligence community concluded that Putin called for an influence campaign aimed at helping Trump win the White House.

When contacted by The Hill on Saturday, the CIA said in a statement that Director Mike PompeoMichael (Mike) Richard PompeoPompeo: Talks with North Korea on returning war dead ‘productive and cooperative’ Trump: Why isn’t ‘fake news’ talking about North Korea? Trump’s arms export rules will undermine US security and risk human rights abuses MORE “stands by and has always stood by” the report.
