GOP lawmaker: Dems not standing for Trump is 'un-American'

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) on Tuesday blasted Democrats who didn't stand and applaud during President TrumpDonald John TrumpGOP lawmakers preparing to vote on bill allowing migrant children to be detained longer than 20 days: report Wasserman Schultz: Infants separated from their parents are in Florida immigrant shelters Ex-White House ethics chief: Sarah Sanders tweet violates ethics laws MORE's State of the Union address last week.

Tenney said on CNN that while she wouldn’t call the behavior “treasonous” like Trump did, she would say it was "un-American, and they don't love our country.”

“I sat on the Democratic side and I was frankly appalled by the behavior of the Democrats,” she said. “I was inundated with text messages and emails from Democrats all across my district saying how ashamed they were of the Democratic Party, [Senate Minority Leader Charles] Schumer [N.Y.], [House Minority Leader] Nancy PelosiNancy Patricia D'Alesandro PelosiTrump shifts on immigration: ‘We need Democrat votes' Trump rips Conor Lamb as '#LambTheSham' in endorsing his GOP opponent Mike Huckabee tweets gang picture he calls Pelosi’s ‘campaign committee’ MORE [Calif.] telling Democrats to sit.”

She added that the Democrats didn’t stand because it was Trump delivering the speech, claiming that Republicans had stood when former President Obama mentioned American values during his addresses before Congress.

“I thought it was terrible that they didn’t clap for very American ideas, and why? Why not? They’re just about 'resist,' and what does 'resist' mean? Obstruct,” Tenney said.

Tenney’s comments come one day after Trump ripped Democrats as “treasonous” for not applauding during his State of the Union address.

"Can we call that treason? Why not?" Trump said. "They certainly didn't seem to love our country very much."
