Bachmann urges confronting lawmakers on healthcare bill

By Bob Cusack - 10/31/09 10:00 AM ET

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) is urging Americans to come to Washington, D.C., next week to roam the halls of Congress and lobby lawmakers against the House Democrats' healthcare reform plan.

The strategy aims at resurrecting the momentum Republicans enjoyed during the August recess, when many critics challenged their members of Congress on healthcare reform. Since then, Democrats have regained their footing and have captured some political momentum to pass a bill.

During an appearance on Fox's "Hannity," Bachmann on Friday night said the plan can be defeated, but only if critics make their case face-to-face with legislators.

Bachmann told conservative commentator Sean Hannity, "The clock is ticking 11:59 ...I've never done this before but I am asking people to come to Washington, D.C., by the carload and next Thursday at noon I'll be at a press conference on the steps of the Capitol.

"I'd love to have every one of your viewers to join me so we can go up and down through the halls, find members of Congress, look at the whites of their eyes and say, 'Don't take away my healthcare.'"

After Hannity opined that lawmakers would likely hide from the crowds, Bachmann responded, "It's not inevitable. This doesn't have to pass and I don't think it will pass if we can get people to literally, physically come to Washington, D.C., next week.

"We need to pay a House call on [Speaker] Nancy Pelosi [D-Calif.] and tell her what she can do with the Pelosi healthcare plan," Bachmann added.

The vocal Republican noted that many Blue Dogs -- a group of conservative Democrats -- are on the fence on how to vote.

"That's why this is such an exciting opportunity for us ...This is our liberty and tyranny moment. This is about patriotism and manning up."

She said the plan on Thursday afternoon will be to walk through the House office buildings to look for lawmakers: "We can walk through Cannon, Longworth and Rayburn [office buildings], walk through the Capitol ..."

The House is scheduled to start debate on the healthcare bill later this week, with a vote likely occurring within the next 10 days.

Some of the people commenting here amaze me. Apparently, you think it's fine for Americans to die because they can't get healthcare. I'm sure you also think medical care for veterans and seniors children is fine, too. And let me take a wild guess here. You're also staunch Christians , love Jesus but ignore his teachings. You're probably also right to lifers who want all babies born but then they can starve and die of disease. If they live long enough, you can sentence them to death.Something is very wrong with this country when thousands of lives are lost and billions of dollars wasted on war and people think it's right. Something is even more wrong when those same people think it's a waste of money to protect the health of the people in this country and don't want any of "their" money spent on it.I work, I pay taxes and I have insurance but more than that, I have a heart and care about the people in this country!BY andreams on 10/31/2009 at 14:14
Just like 9/12, I WILL BE THERE!! You at noon on Thursday.Yours in LibertyBY Sal DeGiorgio on 10/31/2009 at 14:28
Hold your horses Andreams better check out what you are supporting. This huge unreadable bill is to complex and complicated and amounts to a government takeover of our medical care system. We all want changes, we want sensible smaller targeted bills that will solve our problems not ration our care. A bill thats 1990 pages is going to save us money, and simplify our health care system? I do not want to see the best health care system in the world destroyed and I want to be in charge of my medical decisions not a government board or regulations based on age as suggested by Dr. Emmanuel Obama's health care advisor.BY Diane Jones on 10/31/2009 at 14:37
Protest and right to speak is protected by the first amendment. While Bachmann advocates something intrinsically American and Patriotic — her trying to undermine the will of the people and something that will save lives and improve health is questionable at best. Moreover, her use of fear to scare people into the wrong conclusion is reprehensible.BY Patriot on 10/31/2009 at 14:38
I am so proud to have Michele Bachmann be my representative. If I can get there I will be there. I really feel sorry for those who voted this administration into office. They were so deceived and continue to be with this massive bill they are trying to cram down our throats. If it is so great they why doesn't the bill read that the members of congress SHALL enroll … That is how it reads for all of us. Instead they word it the members of congress MAY enroll. Another form of their deceit and this bill is full of it!PS:To ANDREAMS: Yes, I am a Catholic, Yes, I love Jesus and listen to and follow his teachings and guess what I have a heart and really care about my children, grandchildren and the people of this country.BY MaryK on 10/31/2009 at 14:44
I saw Gongresswoman Bachman on Hanniity Friday night and she said something about comming to Washington on this coming Thurs. and meet on the steps of the capital to protest the health care bill. Is this correct?BY wayne minor on 10/31/2009 at 14:45
to andreams and others like you. You may have a heart, but no brain. This will require people that now, can't afford, or don't want to afford to pay for healthcare, to BUY healthcare insurance. The poor will HAVE to pay for the government insurance. That'll teach them priorities, for sure, like maybe paying for healthcare is more important then paying for a cell phone, cable tv, and drugs or booze, etc. But, the government is so full of graft, the dollars that we get back to pay for our healthcare, we'll be lucky if we get 10 cents on the dollar! Look at the cash for clunkers program. It cost $24,000. for each $4,000. car. And the government still hasn't paid out that $4,000. to the dealers, yet, from what I heard. The government could have just bought those people a new car, for that money, but then, they wouldn't get their wallets fatter. Medicare is going bankrupt. If you put the private insurance companies out of business, what kind of healthcare will anyone have. And, as far as your arrogant condemnation of Christians, they have giving more of their money, time, and lives for the poor in the world then any other group. And yes, Christians are against murdering babies. It's in the BIBLE. What this healthcare program is all about is control. If the government controls your healthcare, they control you. I'm NOT a wooden puppet that needs an operator, are you?BY saltnlight on 10/31/2009 at 14:53
Diane Jones:Your care is already rationed. By the insurance companies!! And if it hasn't been yet, it will. Just wait until you get older. Dr. Emannuel is not Obama's health care adviser. Lastly, if Bachmann hates Government health care so much, why doesn't she give up hers?BY Jimmy the Saint on 10/31/2009 at 14:56

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/19/AR2009101902451.htmlMost Americans support a public option. Rep. Bachmann has tried to derail this necessary reform by scaring Americans, and since that hasn't worked, she's organizing a mob to scare her colleagues in Congress. Some day, hopefully, the GOP will realize that these tactics just don't work. And, Rep. Bachmann, you should refer to your BOSS as Speaker Pelosi, not Nancy.BY Sam on 10/31/2009 at 18:08
