Pence: Dems offer wrong economic fix

By Jim Snyder - 11/26/09 11:30 AM ET

Rep. Mike Pence criticized President Barack Obama’s efforts to revive the economy, saying the $787 billion stimulus bill had failed to keep unemployment from rising.

In the GOP weekly address, the chairman of the House Republican Conference said the economy had gone "from bad to worse" under the president’s watch.

"And what is the White House’s answer to our struggles? Another meeting next week. A ‘jobs summit,’ and most likely another proposal to grow government, raise taxes and place more debt on the shoulders of our children and grandchildren," Pence said.

He also criticized Democratic efforts to reform the healthcare system and the push for "government-run insurance."

"Americans know the way to stimulate this economy and help hard-working families is to let Americans keep more of their hard-earned money, not taking more from their wallets."

Now here's a new take by the GOP: "NO!" By my reckoning that's 347,633 times the Reps have made this sophisticated policy argument since they were swept out of Washington by the voters last year.BY DR. DOOM on 11/26/2009 at 12:27
Touche'None of the stimulus has helped the working class, it's all been for the big banks. The working class is what made these big banks, not the other way around. We are not in a recession, we are in a depression. I even suggested doing something similar to the "civilian conservation corp." with no response. I cannot get an acknowledgement or an answer. The stimulus has created less than 5500 jobs in my state, where the unemployment rate is at 8%. I could go on, but you get my drift.BY Robert on 11/26/2009 at 12:38
Any impartial observor knows that Obama's $787 billion "stimulus" plan has stimulated nothing — except the pockets of Obama's Goldman Sachs contributor pals on Wall Street. Despite Obama's false promises when he was peddling this scheme, unemployment has skyrocketed since this boondoggle took effect.BY no hope no change on 11/26/2009 at 12:48
And on top of this, Obama will be jaunting off to Copenhagan soon and will attempt to raise middle class's taxes even higher. I read in the paper this morning that if Obama gets his way the average American family of four will be paying at least $175 more per year in energy costs.BY obama tax raiser on 11/26/2009 at 12:55
THE ONLY "NO" I HEAR IN WASHINGTON IS NO JOBS!!! Where's the jobs that were promised with the $787 BILLION entitlement for the unions and special interest??? Only idiots like Dr. Doom would try to pin this on the GOP… keep being an idiot and collect your free cheese at the welfare office moron. Barrack Insane Obama …mmm mmm mmmm.BY H CLINTON on 11/26/2009 at 12:58
Obama tax raiser, it is more like $4,000 a year for gas, heating and airconditioning . Along with that are a lot of job losses.BY William on 11/26/2009 at 13:04
William,Thanks for pointing that out. The $175 per year figure is just for the Copenhagan scam and is the lowball estimate from the Obama administration — so you're right, the tax increases from Obama for this will probably be much higher.BY obama tax raiser on 11/26/2009 at 13:16
And the precipice we have "come back from" has been only in one sector…banking and Wall St. at the top end only…so while idiots like HClinton on one end and Dr. Doom on the other raise eyebrows with hyperbole we still slide deeper into this recession…and I still see nothing from Pence and the republicans nor any substance to Obama's package.BY Rich McClintock on 11/26/2009 at 13:23
Bush and the Republicans got us here, dispensation for the rich, and forget about the middleclass, and the poor. Bush I seem to remember gave the first of the stimulus,Pres.Obama gets blamed totally, and it's time to quit blaming and get this country back in economical order. Too much fear that if I work with the Prez he might get the country going, get out of self, and the Republican agenda and do what's right for the country.BY Eugene on 11/26/2009 at 13:52
It wasn't the best design because not enough was put into true job creation (infrastructure ).But here is something to consider: in the entire 8 years of the Bush administration after repeat "pro-growth" policies not ONE SINGLE job was created. There were fewer people working at the end of his administration than at the beginning. And that doesn't count the millions of new people on the rolls that needed jobs.BY DuaneBidoux on 11/26/2009 at 14:39
