Tucker Carlson of Fox News and Rachel Maddow of MSNBC had the No. 4 and No. 6 programs, respectively, in all of television on Thursday night, according to Nielsen data.

Thursday’s "Tucker Carlson's Tonight" delivered 3.489 million viewers, while "The Rachel Maddow Show" had 2.532 million, beating other top-10 programs on broadcast networks ABC and FOX.

Both programs air at 9:00 p.m.

In February, compared to Megyn Kelly’s performance as host of "The Kelly File" in February of 2016, Carlson is up 31 percent in total viewers with an average of 3.28 million and is up 55 percent in the key 25- to 54-year-old demographic with 695,000 viewers.
On Maddow's success in the Trump era, MSNBC President Phil Griffin told The Hill in an interview last week that hard work and storytelling are the keys to her success.
"Nobody works harder than Rachel," Griffin said. "Rachel is a student. She is just a different kind of communicator. She weaves a story every day in that first 20 minutes of the show that connects dots, pulls things together, pulls historical references that really is just an amazing piece of work.

"And you come out of it smarter. It's as simple as that."
It is rare for cable news programs to break into the top-10 ratings rankings. But with rising interest in the political process, particularly in President Trump and his new administration, cable news programs have been challenging the broadcast news networks on a more regular basis.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer's briefings, for example, have proved to be ratings gold for the cable news networks, even beating soap operas like "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "General Hospital" on broadcast networks CBS and ABC.
