Six protesters arrested at Senate Hart Building

By Debbie Siegelbaum - 10/11/11 12:53 PM ET

Capitol Police arrested six demonstrators in the Hart Senate Office Building Tuesday in a protest stemming from the ongoing Occupy Wall Street movement.

The six are charged with unlawful conduct-demonstrating in a Capitol building, and are being processed at Capitol Police headquarters, according to department spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

The groups Occupy D.C. and Stop the Machine had announced plans earlier in the day to try and shut down the Senate Hart Building by gathering in the atrium.

Occupy D.C. is an extension of the ongoing Occupy Wall Street movement, which has clogged downtown New York streets for weeks in an attempt to affect economic change.

Stop the Machine has planned several events in D.C., encouraging nonviolent resistance to promote democratic transitions and create sustainable solutions, according to its website.
