President Trump tweeted to congratulate the Republican effort in Tuesday's special congressional election in Georgia as the race heads to a June runoff.

"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidate, BIG 'R' win with runoff in Georgia," he tweeted late Tuesday. "Glad to be of help!"

Democrats had hoped for an outright win for candidate Jon Ossoff on Tuesday. Liberal outside groups and donors poured money into the race.

Republicans responded with their own efforts, including a Monday robocall from the president, and a series of tweets specifically attacking Ossoff.

The president blasted Ossoff in a series of tweets early on the day of the election. He urged Republicans to get out and vote in the race, though he didn't mention any specific GOP candidate.

"Democrat Jon Ossoff would be a disaster in Congress. VERY weak on crime and illegal immigration, bad for jobs and wants higher taxes. Say NO," the president tweeted early Tuesday morning.

"Republicans must get out today and VOTE in Georgia 6. Force runoff and easy win! Dem Ossoff will raise your taxes-very bad on crime & 2nd A."

Ossoff is headed for a runoff against Republican Karen Handel, the former Georgia secretary of state, after failing to clinch 50 percent of the vote.
