Larson: Grayson should apologize for 'die quickly' remark

By Mike Soraghan - 09/30/09 11:41 AM ET

The chairman of the House Democratic Caucus is calling on one of his members to apologize for charging that Republicans want Americans who get sick to "die quickly."

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) said on the floor Tuesday night that "If you get sick, America, the Republican healthcare plan is this: Die quickly." Republicans expressed outrage at the remark, comparing it to Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) shouting, "You lie!" at President Barack Obama during his address to Congress.

Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.), chair of the Republican Study Committee, has drafted a "resolution of disapproval," which is what Democrats passed after Wilson refused to apologize on the House floor.

Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (Conn.) said Grayson's remark wasn't as serious as Wilson's outburst, but still said he should apologize. Wilson apologized privately to the White House, but was officially scolded by the House when he wouldn't apologize on the House floor.

"It's not the same magnitude, clearly, and didn't deal with decorum, as it did in the case of Joe Wilson, but I would encourage Alan to apologize," Larson told reporters. "And I would encourage members that, as we get into a very heated and emotional and visceral debate, that we keep in mind the rules of the House and the way we treat and respect one another."

Republicans quickly took to the floor to demand that Grayson apologize.

But Democrats were quick to point out that Republicans have been making inflammatory comments themselves in the healthcare debate. Aides circulated the quotes and Larson noted them in a short press conference.

Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.) said in July that “Democrats released a healthcare bill which essentially said to America’s seniors: Drop dead.”

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) said, “Government-run healthcare” will “absolutely” “end up killing more people than it saves.”

And Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said, “One in five people have to die because they went to socialized medicine! I would hate to think that among five women, one of 'em is gonna die because we go to socialized care.”

Asked if Grayson should be sanctioned if he doesn't apologize, Larson said, "If that's the case, we should have Ginny Brown-Waite, Tom Coburn and Louie Gohmert apologize for similar things that they said."

The man needs to apologize to the American citizens for making a mockery of our system. These congressmen/women are acting like children instead of adults. ALL SIDES need to grow up!BY JLC on 09/30/2009 at 13:08
The people who need to grow up are those who are trying to distinguish this remark from every other hyperbolic comment made by a member of Congress to push their agenda. This is the very place and time for a partisan overstatement, where people know to take everything with a grain of salt and wearing waders. This is not an insult to a sitting President and an attack on his character while convened in a joint session. Nor is it an effort to try to convince the ignorant masses that there are republican "death panels" in a plan. Get real you Republican cry babies!BY John in Atlanta on 09/30/2009 at 13:26
Our system is a mockery. Perhaps generations of politicians should be apologizing to us for making it so.BY Tak on 09/30/2009 at 13:28
Decorum is one thing, but the difference here is truth. When Joe Wilson yelled "you lie", he was wrong. Obama had not lied. Sure enough, his proposal excludes coverage for illegal aliens. But Grayson told the truth. He said it in a more shocking tone than many of us may want to hear. And saying what he did may not do a lot to further his cause. But the republican plan for healthcare is NONE. Certainly, I have not heard of any proposals from the GOP, except "whatever Obama wants, we don't want".BY Allan on 09/30/2009 at 13:34
Expanding on JLC's comments, I think most of our 535 senators and representatives should apologize to America for their handling of the economic crisis, i.e., the bailouts, and the healthcare debacle. Do we need another revolution to get their attention? They don't seem to be listening to anyone outside of the Beltway.BY David Whisner on 09/30/2009 at 13:38
Don't the supports of this bill realize that they will get old someday and these rules will apply to them also. Oh on wait a minute, congress has 6 options to choose, from independent insurance companies. Remember America we pay THEM, and we lose are choice,WE ppay THEM, AND TAX PAYERS pay THIER insuirance premiums. It's time for for accountabiliy, and responsibility.BY Adam O Denver CO on 09/30/2009 at 13:42
Fear Not Republicans and their Extremist Hate America Pundits are stirring up the Hate and push for an armed Coup against the Federal Government namely Obama and Democratic Congress and now that they have their base Nut Cases fired up and ready they want to get the Generals to turn Guns on Washington in support.Liberal gun owners should stock up on ammunition; it may be needed to defend our Constitution from these Traitors? Is this why Obama and No Democrats in Congress have made a move to change Gun Laws?BY Donaldd on 09/30/2009 at 14:08
Years ago the Democrats crafted a bill that effectively established quotas for minorities but, at the beginning of the bill it stated, "nothing in this bill is to be construed to be a quota system." A rose by any other name Allan…stating illegals are not to be covered and then voting down any attempt to make the statement effective, is a lie. Obama is a liar, as are Pelosi and Reid. The Democrats may well steamroll this garbage through Congress stating that the "majority" wants the public option. We will find out for certain what "the poles" realy say in 2010. I for one will vote against anyone who voted in favor of this monstrosity and Cap Trade.BY Jimmy Knuckles on 09/30/2009 at 14:18
It is insane for the media to try and compare the truth this representative spoke (with the noted exception that some Democrats are for dying quickly also) to that of that nutjob Joe Wilson. There is no comparison to the two, what a mockery our Political and Media system is, our media is not for the benefit of the citizens of this country instead they are for thier shareholders. Imagine a bunch of rich people on tv telling us how we feel. They don't know what it's like to not have insurance, food, money etc, etc, but they can tell us how we feel. What a disgrace…BY lori jones on 09/30/2009 at 14:22
Three cheers for Alan Grayson. He didn't lie or call anyone a name. he told the truth. The Republican Health Care plan for the uninsured is zero, nada, nothing. So, if you get sick, you better die quick and spare us all the problems, according to the Creepublicans.BY elaygee on 09/30/2009 at 14:33
