Healthcare drive to top news shows

By Michael O'Brien - 12/19/09 10:46 AM ET

The health reform legislation before the Senate appears set to dominate the Sunday morning talk show circuit.

A bevy of senators will make the case for and against healthcare reform efforts on tomorrow morning's news shows as they begin what Democratic leaders will be their last week of debate.

"Fox News Sunday" will welcome three senators, John McCain (R-Ariz.), Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), to discuss healthcare, as will CBS's "Face the Nation," which will feature Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

Those shows may best mirror the contentious debate that's played itself out in the Senate over recent weeks, with centrists like Conrad and Snowe having played an instrumental role in shaping how the debate's proceeded.

Democratic leaders have courted Snowe in hopes that she would cast a GOP vote in favor of their bill in their bid to get 60 votes, and her appearance on Sunday could lend some insight into how well those efforts have proceeded.

Insight into party leaders' strategies will be on display on ABC's "This Week," where Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) will appear.

White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod will also join senators on ABC, CNN, and NBC, where he'll make the administration's case for the health bill. Axelrod will square off against former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean on "Meet the Press," as well. Dean has made the case against the Senate health bill, leading to the White House pushing against the former party chairman this past week.

Friday's culmination of a global climate change summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, will also take center stage on CNN's "State of the Union" alongside Axelrod.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.), two advocates of curbing climate change, will appear along with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who's worked to craft a compromise on cap-and-trade legislation in the Senate.
