Democrat Joe Courtney narrowly beat Republican Rep. Rob Simmons in Connecticut’s rural 2nd District. Courtney’s defeat of Simmons comes after Simmons won by eight points in each of the last two elections, including over Courtney in 2002.

Courtney is a former state legislator who served from 1987 until 1994. He lost a campaign for lieutenant governor in 1998, and served as the Connecticut campaign coordinator for former Sen. John Edwards’s (D-N.C.) presidential bid in 2004.
