Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) told onlookers at a committee hearing — including Rep. Vic Snyder (D-Ark.) — several months ago that he felt like a “fiscal conservative running in Cuba,” referring to a Cuba’s communist government.
“It was Rob’s attempt at humor,” Snyder said, adding that Simmons’s remark was not part of a personal conversation and that he has been using the quip in his stump speeches. “It’s an example of how nervous they are.”
Simmons’s campaign spokesman did not respond to requests for comment, but a spokesman for his Democratic challenger, Joe Courtney, said it was “sad” that Simmons “would compare his district and its people to a communist country.”
