Senate to add procedural change to accommodate streamlining bill

By Josiah Ryan - 06/29/11 05:05 PM ET

The Senate is now working on a resolution that would change its standing rules to streamline the confirmation process for some executive nominees.

The resolution is similar to a bill that passed the Senate earlier in the day. The resolution would allow 272 further nominees to bypass the Senate's time consuming confirmation process.

The Democratic majority has allowed Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) to offer an amendment to the underlying resolution that would attempt to prevent the creation of duplicative and overlapping federal programs.

The amendment is subject to a two-thirds majority vote threshold.

If the amendment were to see a vote and reach that threshold, however, it would go no further, as the underlying resolution does not require the approval of the House or the President.
