Dem senator compares Trump to Marie Antoinette
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) is comparing President Trump to Marie Antoinette, the French queen whose lavish spending and aloofness became the subject of public ire during the French Revolution.
"Trump plays Marie Antoinette: Sits at his golf club while Puerto Rico suffers...then attacks San Juan Mayor for 'poor leadership.'" Merkley wrote on Twitter.
Marie Antoinette was France's last queen before the French Revolution. She, as well as her huband French King Louis XVI, were jailed in the rebellion and eventually executed by guillotine.
The Trump administration has come under fire in recent days for its response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. While the president is set to visit the storm-struck island on Tuesday, he is currently spending the weekend at his Bedminster, N.J. golf club.
He defended his administration's relief efforts on Saturday, and lashed out at San Juan Mayor Carmen Yul n Cruz "and others in Puerto Rico" for depending too much on federal aid and "expecting everything to be done for them."
"Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help," Trump wrote. "They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job."
