Biden: Economy will begin adding jobs in spring

By Michael O'Brien - 01/28/10 11:07 AM ET

People will see job growth in the U.S. by spring, Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday.

The vice president suggested that the U.S. economy would see a positive number of jobs created in the next few months, after nearly two whole years of negative job growth.

"I say they're going to start to see unemployment abate," Biden said during an appearance on the "Today Show" on NBC. "In the spring, you're going to see a net increase on a monthly basis in jobs."

The U.S. economy has shed jobs every month since January of 2008, with the exception of November of 2009, during which the U.S. added 4,000 new jobs, according to preliminary estimates.

President Barack Obama made clear in his State of the Union address that jobs would be his top priority in the coming year, after a year in office which saw hundreds of thousands of jobs eliminated.

To that end, congressional Democrats have been crafting varying spending and tax credit initiatives to spur job creation, especially as voters' anxiety about the economy remains high ahead of this fall's midterm elections.

Biden emphasized that job creation wouldn't come all at once, but defended the initiatives Obama laid out in his speech as contributing to job growth.

"The idea that we're going to get 7 million people who were unemployed as a result of the recession reemployed is not going to happen," he said.

Of course there will be jobs in the spring, you will have the beginning of seasonal hires and artificial jobs[temp]that will be created by government as they run the money into the system, hot off the press.BY rick on 01/28/2010 at 11:40
LOL…yeah, and I'll bet that Biden is counting on the seasonal hiring of the thousands of CENSUS WORKERS to boost the spring unemployment numbers — we are smart enough to see through that shame 'improvement', though.BY Phil T on 01/28/2010 at 11:58
Yeah, government jobs.Last nights SOTU was the pinnicle of arrogance and hypocrisy. For any member of the House or Senate to shout, "You Lie!", would have been a gross understatement.Obama confirmed last night what I think most Americans know, this guy is a far left idealogue that is completely disconnected from 'our' reality. He still 'stumps' as if he wants to come into washington and 'fix' whats wrong, oblivious to the fact that he has been running the show for over a year. His narcissism and his equally appointed arrogance, combi ned with a progressive, maybe even Marxist world veiw, metastasized from a life long relationship with 'questionable' special interests, I believe, makes him a very dangerous president during very dangerous times. However, our Founding Fathers and our courageous Military have given us a solution: 2010 and 2012!!!BY azjim on 01/28/2010 at 12:03
PHIL T .. That's exactly what I was thinking. HA HA… job growth in government due to the census workers. I wonder how many people will actually buy into this "fake" job growth.BY JLC on 01/28/2010 at 12:39
The Temporary Census workers to be hired by this spring are actually going to be over a million … I wonder why it takes this many Gov't contracted workers to get this job done, anyway?BY REALITY CHECK on 01/28/2010 at 12:42
