Weiner: Obama's health bill won't be as good as House bill
President Barack Obama's healthcare bill may disappoint ardent supporters of the House bill, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) predicted Tuesday.
Weiner, who had been an ardent supporter of the public option, said the bill the president is set to unveil Wednesday is unlikely going to be "as good" as the legislation passed by the House, though the New York Democrat cautioned lawmakers to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
"I think he's going to have a bill that's not going to be as good as the House bill," Weiner said during an appearance on Fox News. "I think it's lost the public option now, and I'm fighting to get it back in. I think there are things that are mistakes like having statewide exchanges instead of a national exchange."
Still, Weiner cautioned, the bill has a number of provisions with which Democrats can be pleased, including extending coverage and reducing taxes. He added that the process moving forward would only be intended to improve the Senate bill.
"Here's the way to look at it: the Senate bill with modifications to make it palatable, to make it better," he said. "The Senate bill was not good enough to pass."
But, while Weiner sent positive signals toward Obama's proposal and the process moving forward, he said that he had not decided yet on how to vote for the package.
"I haven't said I'm going to vote for it," Weiner said.
