Anti-Lieberman group to deliver 43,000 signatures
Posted: 07/08/08 05:08 PM [ET]
Liberal activists say they will deliver a 43,000-signature online petition to Democrats on Wednesday seeking to strip Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) of his rank and Homeland Security Committee chairmanship in the next Congress.

Brave New Films, a new-media venture that released an anti-Lieberman video recently, worked with the netroots to grow the petition and will present it to the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee at 11 a.m.

Lieberman still caucuses with Democrats despite officially leaving the party two years ago. But the 2000 Democratic vice presidential nominee has been a lightning rod for criticism among liberals because of his support of the Iraq war and his endorsement of GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (Ariz.).

Senate Democrats have trodden lightly, though, given that they hold only a two-seat majority, 51-49.

Lieberman spokesman Marshall Wittmann said in a statement: “Americans are tired of this type of old, petty, partisan politics. Sen. Lieberman will continue to put the country’s interests before partisan interests.”
