Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) will lead a delegation of Republicans to Denver and Alaska next week to promote the use of U.S. resources and new technology to relieve the country’s energy crisis, according to sources familiar with the trip.
Freshmen Republican Reps. Michele Bachmann (Minn.), Gus Bilirakis (Fla.), Mary Fallin (Okla.), Dean Heller (Nev.), Jim Jordan (Ohio), Doug Lamborn (Colo.), Bob Latta (Ohio), Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), Steve Scalise (La.) and Adrian Smith (Neb.) will leave with Boehner on July 18 for Golden, Colo., where they will tour the National Renewable Energy Lab.
The group will then fly to Alaska, stopping at Prudhoe Bay and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), and finally visiting the town of Kaktovik before returning to Washington on July 21.
A Boehner spokesman would not confirm or deny the trip.
“We are always looking for new ways to highlight our ‘all of the above’ energy strategy,” spokesman Michael Steel said.
Fallin, who confirmed that she would attend, said the trip was meant to educate freshman members about the region so they could pass on that knowledge to their constituents.
As a longtime advocate for Alaskan drilling, Fallin said she was looking forward to seeing the area firsthand and hoped to increase her knowledge of renewable sources of energy to pass on to voters.
“This trip will focus on a wide range of energy research and production, giving us a glimpse at the technologies and resources that make up the future of American energy,” she said.
As gas prices have continued to rise, congressional Republicans have scored political points against anti-drilling Democrats by painting them as opposing viable energy solutions.
On July 13, five Republican candidates for Congress will also make the trek to ANWR in hopes to promote drilling in the region.
Republicans who will be on that trip include Craig Williams, who will run against Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.); Chris Lien, who is challenging Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D) in South Dakota; Paul Stark, who faces Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.); Luke Puckett, who takes on Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.); and Mike Sodrel, who is running against Rep. Baron Hill (D-Ind.).
