Conrad Burns, a former Montana senator whose ties to Jack Abramoff reportedly drew scrutiny from federal investigators, reported spending $160,000 in campaign money on legal fees last quarter. Burns, a Republican, lost his reelection race to Jon Tester, a Democrat. But federal election rules allow money raised for a campaign to be spent on legal fees, if the legal dispute relates to government service. Records show Friends of Conrad Burns wrote two checks to the firm Powell Goldstein: a $72,347 check on Jan. 3, and another for $88,029 on March 29. The campaign committee reported spending $188,432 in total the first three months of 2007. It reported $168,831 remaining in cash at the end of the reporting period. |
