President Bush said Tuesday he is “disappointed” with the decision of Democratic leaders to embark on a collision course with him regarding the funding of the war in Iraq. The conference agreement on the supplemental funding bill “includes some of the worst parts of the measures they had earlier passed with narrow majorities in the House and the Senate,” Bush stated. The president, before reiterating that he would veto the measure, specifically criticized provisions he said would “handcuff our generals” and others he said added unrelated spending to the bill. Bush noted that, while it was the right of Democratic leaders to make a political statement with the funding bill, doing so “is wrong for our troops and it’s wrong for our country.” While the president acknowledged that “Americans have serious concerns about this war,” he said U.S. security depends on success in Iraq. “The price of giving up there would be paid in American lives for years to come,” Bush said. “It would be an unforgivable mistake for leaders in Washington to allow politics and impatience to stand in the way of protecting the American people.” |
