President Bush on Monday said he understands why Americans are worried about the economy but also reminded the country that it “has continued to grow in the face of unprecedented challenges.” Bush, who is embarking on a farewell trip to Europe, said he hopes that recent measures taken will help to prop up the ailing economy. “A lot of Americans are concerned about our economy. I can understand why,” he said. “Gasoline prices are high; energy prices are high. I do remind them that we have put a stimulus package forward that is expected to help boost the economy.” Bush touted some of the strengths of the U.S. economy and also stressed the need to keep the dollar healthy. “A strong dollar is in our nation’s interests. It is in the interests of the global economy,” he stated. “Our economy is large and it’s open and flexible. Our capital markets are some of the deepest and most liquid. And the long-term health and strong foundation of our economy will shine through and be reflected in currency values.” Bush will attend a U.S.-European Union summit and also stop in England, France, Germany, Italy and Northern Ireland. He argued that it is important that “both the U.S. economy and European economies need to be flexible in order to deal with today’s challenges.” |
