Bush: ‘I’m sorry it’s come to this’
Posted: 04/27/07 12:18 PM [ET]
President Bush said Friday he regrets that the debate between the White House and a Democratic-controlled Congress over the Iraq war has forced him into vetoing an Iraq funding bill.

“I’m sorry it’s come to this,” Bush said. “Nevertheless, it is what it is, and it will be vetoed. And my veto will be sustained.”

Bush said that after his veto of the legislation, which includes a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, he will invite leaders from both parties to the White House to “discuss a way forward.”

Bush said he believes it is a “mistake for Congress to try to tell generals or military experts how to conduct a war,” and categorically ruled out signing legislation that would set a withdrawal date.

“So if they want to try again that which I have said was unacceptable, then of course I’ll veto it,” Bush told reporters following a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “But I hope it doesn’t come to that. I believe we can work a way forward. And I think we can come to our senses and make sure that we get the money to the troops in a timely fashion.”
