Congressional leaders are already looking past President Bush’s promised veto of the Iraq supplemental spending bill. After yesterday’s meeting at the White House on the legislation, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said, “We’re willing to work together to come to agreement.” But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said, “We need to get the bill down to [the president]. It’ll be vetoed, then we go on to the second bill.” He added, “We need to get money to the troops. I think that will happen fairly soon in a second bill.” House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), asked if anything had changed in the hour-long meeting at the White House, paused and the said, “No.” Pelosi said the House expects to finish work on what’s now been termed the “first bill.” |
