Bush reaffirms his confidence in Gonzales
Posted: 04/23/07 11:48 AM [ET]
President Bush Monday said Alberto Gonzales’s performance at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week boosted his confidence in the attorney general.

Though several Republicans were highly critical of Gonzales during and after the hearing Thursday on the firing of eight U.S. attorneys, Bush indicated he was pleased with the performance of the former White House counsel.

“The attorney general went up and gave a very candid assessment and answered every question he could possibly answer — honestly answer,” Bush told reporters. “And in a way that increased my confidence in his ability to do the job.”

The president also restated his right to replace U.S. attorneys.

“As the investigation or the hearings went forward, it was clear that the attorney general broke no law, did no wrongdoing,” Bush added.
