President Bush on Wednesday signed the $152 billion stimulus package that he hopes will jump-start the economy in the coming months. “Congress passed a really good piece of legislation, and they did so in a very expeditious manner,” said Bush, who was flanked by congressional leaders, prior to signing the bill. The president praised the bipartisan effort that it took to quickly pass the legislation, which will grant rebates of up to $1,200 to most people who paid income taxes last year. “You know, a lot of folks in America probably were saying that it’s impossible for those of us in Washington to find common ground, to reach compromise on important issues,” Bush said. “I didn’t feel that way; I know the leaders didn’t feel that way. And as a result, we have come together on a single mission — and that is to put the people’s interests first.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) also praised the quick action by the federal government to address an economic slowdown. “At a time when American families face enormous economic challenges, Democrats, Republicans and President Bush joined together to move our nation forward and renew our nation’s promise of jobs and opportunity for all,” Pelosi said. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) also joined the chorus of praise. “The bipartisan plan the president signed today will help millions of Americans who are struggling in an uncertain economy,” Reid said. “Congress promised to act quickly and effectively to help those who need it most, and this law represents a promise kept to the American people.” |
