President Bush Friday emphasized the need to uphold “the dignity of human life,” two days after the Senate again passed a bill to allow federal funding of stem cell research. Bush, who has said he would veto the legislation if it reached his desk, used remarks at a National Catholic Prayer Breakfast to stress his opposition to the “temptation to manipulate life in ways that do not respect the humanity of the person.” On Wednesday, the Senate passed a bill that would free taxpayer funds for research on embryonic stem cells. The legislation easily cleared the 60-vote threshold, but fell short of reaching 67 votes, which would allow supporters of the measure to override a presidential veto. In 2001, Bush strictly limited funding for embryonic stem cell research. Many scientists believe these cells are potentially useful in treating diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Bush also touted faith-based programs, education and comprehensive immigration reform in his remarks. |
