Shortly before the House was scheduled to vote on an Iraq spending bill, President Bush Thursday praised the compromise that his administration and congressional leaders had reached on the issue. “By voting for this bill, members of both parties can show our troops and the Iraqis and the enemy that our country will support our service men and women in harm’s way,” Bush told reporters. He lauded Congress for agreeing to drop a withdrawal timeline and billions of non-military spending. “As it provides vital funds for our troops, this bill also reflects a consensus that the Iraqi government needs to show real progress in return for America’s continued support and sacrifice,” Bush said. The president, who also prepared Americans for more U.S. casualties, added that meeting the benchmarks would be challenging for Iraq’s government. |
