President Bush Monday vowed to work with Democrats to end the stalemate over whether Iraq war funds should be tied to a troop-withdrawal timeline. Bush, speaking to reporters at the White House, said he is interested in Democrats’ opinions and looks forward “to working with members of both parties to get a bill that doesn’t set artificial timetables and doesn’t micromanage and gets the money to our troops.” Democratic leaders accuse Bush of stubbornly following his own course on Iraq and failing to listen to voters. Democrats say last year’s election, which brought them to power in Congress, showed that the American people want a change of direction in Iraq. Bush is expected to veto an Iraq funding bill this week that includes a withdrawal timeline for U.S. troops. The president said he thinks there is common ground on which a compromise can be built. “I believe there’s a lot of Democrats that understand that we need to get the money to the troops as soon as possible,” he said. “I’m optimistic we can get something done in a positive way.” |
