The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee yesterday passed a bill by voice vote that would allow the Capitol Power Plant to administer a demonstration project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
“Using the Capitol Power Plant to showcase ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is a good way for Congress to practice what we preach,” Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), who cosponsored the bill, said in a release yesterday. “This bill gives us an opportunity to demonstrate how coal can continue to play a role in generating electricity as long as its emissions are capped and reduced.”
The Environmental Protection Agency would award a $3 million competitive grant for a two-year project to capture carbon dioxide that is emitted from the plant.
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the committee, is also a cosponsor.
