Democrats in Indiana’s 7th district chose Andre Carson, the grandson of the late Rep. Julia Carson, to run in a special election to fill her seat. Carson, a member of the Indianapolis city-county council, received 223 of the 429 votes cast in the Saturday special election primary, an overwhelming victory in a field of eight candidates. As Indiana law requires, precinct committeemen and women voted in the special election caucus. Julia Carson, a 10-year veteran of the House, died Dec. 15 after battling lung cancer. Andre Carson, 33, bested a crowded field of Democratic candidates that included state Rep. Carolene Mays, who also is the publisher and president of the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper, state Rep. David Orentlicher, who also is a lawyer and physician, Marion County Treasurer Michael Rodman, attorney Randle Pollard, Jeffery White, a middle school principle, and Stephanie McCabe, who has worked in the human resources industry. Republicans will choose their nominee Sunday and the candidates will have nearly two months to compete before the special election takes place March 11. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen (Md.) congratulated Andre Carson in a statement. “Mr. Carson is a strong leader, building on his grandmother’s work on behalf of the people of Indianapolis,” said Van Hollen. “Mr. Carson is a committed advocate for Indiana’s 7th District and will be a great asset to the Democratic Majority.” |
