Rep. Don Cazayoux's (D-La.) re-election battle just got tougher after a former Democratic primary opponent qualified to run as an independent. Michael Jackson (I) filed Friday afternoon, just hours before the 5 p.m. deadline. Jackson lost to Cazayoux in the April Democratic primary runoff and, since then, the African-American state representative has said he might challenge the newly elected incumbent as an Independent.
Jackson took 43 percent of the vote against Cazayoux in the one-third black district. But the Louisiana Democratic Party is standing behind its incumbent.
"The Louisiana Democratic Party is one hundred percent behind our incumbent Congressman Don Cazayoux. Don has shown himself to be an effective and valuable voice for the people of the sixth district and we are confident that the voters of the sixth district will stand with him in November," party chairman Chris Whittington said. The Republican candidate is state Sen. Bill Cassidy. "Obviously this may affect the election, but right now we're focusing on Bill Cassidy," Cassidy's campaign manager Chris Ingram said. |
