House Democratic Whip James Clyburn (S.C.) said the House would try on Friday to pass a Wall Street bailout bill that is expected to clear the Senate Wednesday evening. “We ought to get the bill maybe around noon tomorrow. It’ll have to lay over with the Rules Committee. We won't be able to vote on this until Friday,” Clyburn said Wednesday on MSNBC. “Hopefully, we can have some debate, maybe on the rule tomorrow, as well as maybe some on the bill. But we won't be able to vote on it until Friday.” Clyburn warned that the changes to the bill, such as a tax package added in the Senate, could result in a net loss of votes. “To try to pick up 12 votes on the Republican side when — hopefully we can get more than that — you could very well lose 20 votes on the Democratic side,” Clyburn said. The House’s first attempt of passing the bailout failed 205-228 on Monday. The lawmaker said he thought that the House had moved “too hasty.” “We did not do enough to explain to people what we were doing. We should have been talking about the street that people lived on,” Clyburn said. “I’m now talking about Walker Avenue that I grew up on or Main Street where the grocery store is or Broad Street where the automobile dealers are, so that people can begin to relate to the fact that what we are doing here is trying to stabilize their lives, trying to preserve their credit, trying to make sure that their students can get the loans that they need to further their education.” |
