Cole: House GOP must rely on McCain-Palin
Posted: 09/04/08 07:56 PM [ET]

The House GOP will rely on the top of their ticket for electoral victory, according to the top House Republican in charge of campaigns.

“Our strength in Congressional races this year rests at the top of the ticket,” National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Tom Cole (Okla.) told delegates Thursday in his address to the Republican National Convention.

He implored the party faithful to work hard for their presidential candidate. “The harder you campaign for John McCain, the better our Congressional candidates will run,” he said.

Cole faces a tough task in trying to increase the size of the House GOP conference, as dozens of Republicans are retiring from the House at the end of the year, and his party faces a difficult political climate. The NRCC also has less money than its Democratic counterpart, and Cole has indicated it will have to be selective in funding candidates.

A month before the GOP convention, Cole advised Republicans candidates on a conference call to skip the convention and use that time to campaign. He also told candidates and their staff to not worry about distancing themselves from the GOP.
