House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) criticized Fox News Tuesday for mistaking him with Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) and subsequently issuing a “lackluster” apology. On Monday, Fox had shown file footage of Conyers shaking hands with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales at a recent congressional hearing when relaying news that Jefferson was to be indicted in a Justice Department corruption investigation. “Fox News has a history of inappropriate on-air mistakes that are neither fair, nor balanced,” Conyers said in a statement. “This type of disregard for people of color should no longer be tolerated.” The news network apologized for the error today, with an anchor saying, “We mistakenly ran the wrong video to accompany this story, and we apologize for that error.” “I am personally offended by the network’s complete disregard for accuracy in reporting and lackluster on-air apology,” said Conyers. |
