House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she has disagreed with her pastors, dismissing claims that Americans will hold the controversial sermons of Rev. Jeremiah Wright against Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). During an interview with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News that aired Tuesday night, Pelosi strongly defended Obama when pressed on the effect Wright will have on the presidential election.“Look, I am just glad [Obama] went to church,” Pelosi said. Pelosi, a Catholic who supports abortion rights, said she doesn’t believe that politicians "should be held accountable for everything that their pastors say in their church. I have disagreements with some of the things my own pastors and churches that I go to and if I had to walk out every time I had an area of disagreement, then I would be hard put. It's a disagreement.” The House Speaker said Americans will not be voting on Wright this November and pointed out that Democrats won recent House special elections in conservative-leaning districts: “I do not think that the judgment that will be made by the American people will be about Rev. Wright. It didn’t work in Mississippi and it didn’t work in Louisiana. That's where the Republicans tried to pin that on our Democratic candidates there." Pelosi claimed that people aren’t interested in what their politician’s pastor said and what the politician thinks about it. Instead, Pelosi said, voters want to know about what their candidates think about the economy, jobs, and healthcare. |
