Democrats tap Berman for Foreign Affairs chairman
Posted: 03/06/08 07:00 PM [ET]

The Democratic Steering and Policy Committee has recommended Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) as the next chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Berman, who was widely expected to get the leadership nod, will replace the late Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.). The full Democratic Caucus is expected to vote next week on Berman’s nomination.

“Howard Berman comes to the chairmanship of the Foreign Affairs Committee at a critical juncture in history, which is why his colleagues chose to entrust a leader of his knowledge and experience,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

The Steering and Policy Committee also recommended that Rep. Albio Sires (D-N.J.) be named to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, filling the vacancy left by Rep. Julia Carson’s (D-Ind.) death.
