Rep. John Doolittle (Calif.) has become the latest Republican lawmaker to break ranks with President Bush on the increasingly unpopular war in Iraq. In a town hall meeting and an editorial board meeting in his district Thursday, Doolittle said U.S. troops should be pulled back from the front lines “as soon as possible.” He said operations should be handed over to Iraqi forces. Doolittle is the first Republican House member to call for a pullout since Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana broke with Bush on the war last week. The shift comes as Bush’s popularity is at historical lows, and ignores the administration’s request that lawmakers wait until September to assess Bush’s “surge” plan. |
