Edwards to drop out of race
Posted: 01/30/08 09:33 AM [ET]

Former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.)  has decided to drop out of the presidential race, ending his campaign for the Democratic nomination, according to a campaign aide.

The report comes days after a disappointing finish for Edwards in South Carolina, his home state. Edwards finished a distant third in the Palmetto state's primary on Saturday.

Edwards finished second to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) in the Iowa caucuses, but has since trailed Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in every contest.

He is expected to make the official announcement at 1 p.m.EST, according to the Associated Press.
