Ensign gets Finance Committee seat
Posted: 07/10/07 03:20 PM [ET]
Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) will fill the vacant slot on the Senate Finance Committee, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced Tuesday.

“Sen. Ensign has been a leader on key issues before the Finance Committee: healthcare, tax relief and entitlement reform. He will be a great asset to the committee,” McConnell said.

Another factor in the decision was Ensign’s work as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

“As I told John when I made this decision, we appreciate his efforts on behalf of the conference. And it’s important to recognize the efforts of people who do the heavy lifting around here on behalf of the team,” McConnell said.

Ensign said he is looking forward to serving on the panel.

“This seat provides me with a better opportunity to advance several of my top legislative priorities, such as reducing taxes, encouraging investment, making government more efficient and reforming our entitlement programs for future generations,” he stated.

The slot opened up when Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.) passed away last month.

Thomas’s replacement, Sen. John Barrasso (R), will serve on the Energy and Natural Resources, Environment and Public Works and Indian Affairs committees.

“I know that John will represent Wyoming well, and that these assignments will be an asset to his service for the people of his state,” McConnell said.
