Florida-13 task force to hold first meeting today
Posted: 04/16/07 09:04 PM [ET]
The task force assigned to look into voting irregularities in Florida’s 13th district congressional election will hold its first meeting today at 10 a.m.

Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-Texas) will chair the task force, which was ordered by House Administration Committee Chairwoman Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-Calif.) on March 22. The panel will investigate 18,000 ballots in Sarasota County that did not contain votes for the race.

Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) defeated Democrat Christine Jennings by 369 votes in November. Jennings is challenging the result in Florida and with the Administration Committee, saying the undervote occurred due to malfunctioning voting machines.

Today’s meeting is meant to be organizational and informational and will not be open to the public. Counsel for Buchanan and Jennings have been invited.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) is the second-ranking Democrat on the committee. Republicans have refused to seat a member in protest. They contend that the committee should not act until the state is finished with the case, citing historical precedent.
