The special election to replace the late Rep. Charles Norwood (R) will be held today in Georgia’s 10th congressional district, with the polls closing at 7 p.m.
Turnout is expected to be around 10 percent, and about 10,000 of the district’s 340,000 registered voters cast early ballots, according to the Georgia secretary of state.
Despite a lack of public polling of the race, former state Sen. Jim Whitehead (R) is the odds-on favorite and has the support of many of Norwood’s people.
Among the rest, Republicans Paul Broun and Bill Greene and Democrat James Marlow have raised the most money, although nowhere near Whitehead’s take. They figure to be the best bets to take him to a runoff in the strongly conservative district, which gave President Bush more than 70 percent of the vote in 2004.
If no one garners more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff will be held July 17.
