Gore to endorse Obama in Detroit
Posted: 06/16/08 04:06 PM [ET]
Former Vice President Al Gore will endorse Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Monday night at 8:30 p.m. in Detroit.

Gore was one of the biggest remaining names in the Democratic Party yet to endorse Obama, and his name has been mentioned as a potential Obama vice presidential pick.

Obama is on a two-day swing in Michigan to make up for lost time. The Illinois senator did not campaign in the state during the primary season and his name was not on the Michigan Democratic primary ballot because the state moved up its election date in violation of party rules.

In an e-mail to his supporters, Gore wrote, "A few hours from now I will step onstage in Detroit, Mich., to announce my support for Sen. Barack Obama.

"Over the past 18 months, Barack Obama has united a movement. He knows change does not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. or Capitol Hill. It begins when people stand up and take action," Gore wrote.

"From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected president of the United States."
